Japanese Reading
ある朝、私は電車で友だちに会いに行く予定でした。
家を出るのが少し遅くなって、駅まで急いで歩きました。
駅に着いたとき、ちょうど電車のドアが閉まりました。
「間に合わなかった……」と思いました。
次の電車を調べると、15分後でした。
私は駅のベンチに座って、電車を待つことにしました。
少し時間があったので、自動販売機でお茶を買いました。
そして、友だちに「電車に乗り遅れたから、少し遅れるね」とメッセージを送りました。
15分後、次の電車が来ました。
今度はちゃんと乗ることができました。
少しあせりましたが、無事に友だちのところへ行くことができました。

Useful Expressions
1. ～予定でした
ある朝、私は電車で友だちに会いに行く予定でした。
One morning, I was planning to go meet my friend by train.
～予定です / ～予定でした is used when talking about a plan or schedule.
- 明日は買い物に行く予定です。
I’m planning to go shopping tomorrow.
2. ～たとき
駅に着いたとき、ちょうど電車のドアが閉まりました。
When I arrived at the station, the train doors closed.
～たとき means “when…” and is useful for talking about something that happened at a certain time.
- 家に帰ったとき、雨が降っていました。
When I got home, it was raining.
3. ～ことにしました
私は駅のベンチに座って、電車を待つことにしました。
I decided to sit on a bench at the station and wait for the train.
～ことにする means “to decide to do something.”
- 今日は家で休むことにしました。
I decided to rest at home today.
4. ～ので
少し時間があったので、自動販売機でお茶を買いました。
Because I had a little time, I bought some tea from a vending machine.
～ので is used to give a reason. It often sounds a little softer than ～から.
- 疲れたので、早く寝ました。
I went to bed early because I was tired.
English Translation
One morning, I was planning to go meet my friend by train.
I left home a little late, so I hurried to the station.
When I arrived, the train doors were just closing.
“I didn’t make it…” I thought.
I checked the next train, and it was coming in 15 minutes.
I decided to sit on a bench at the station and wait.
Since I had a little time, I bought some tea from a vending machine.
Then I sent my friend a message saying, “I missed the train, so I’ll be a little late.”
Fifteen minutes later, the next train arrived.
This time, I was able to get on.
I felt a little rushed, but I made it to my friend safely.
