Japanese Reading

A bowl of ramen on the counter at a ramen restaurant in Japan

English Translation

After I had been in Japan for a while, I went out for ramen with a friend.

When we entered the restaurant, I could hear slurping sounds coming from all around me. Looking around, I saw lots of people slurping their noodles as they ate.

In my country, I had always tried not to make loud noises while eating, so I was a little surprised at first.

I asked my friend, “Is it better to slurp when you eat ramen?” My friend said, “You don’t have to. But a lot of people do.”

After hearing that, I decided to try it myself.

However, when I actually tried, it was harder than I expected. I almost sucked up the soup along with the noodles and ended up coughing halfway through.

My friend laughed and said, “You don’t have to force yourself.”

Since then, I sometimes slurp when I can, but when I can’t do it well, I just eat normally.

Once I realized that I didn’t have to eat the same way as everyone around me, I became able to relax and enjoy ramen more than before.
