English Translation
I’ve always tried to arrive a little early for appointments. Especially after I started working in Japan, I thought, “It’s better to arrive early than to be late,” so I made sure to leave plenty of extra time.
One day, I arrived at an acquaintance’s home about 20 minutes before we had agreed to meet. However, they were still cleaning and preparing food, and my early arrival actually made them hurry.
That was when I first realized that arriving early isn’t always better. If you’re meeting someone somewhere, you can simply arrive early and wait. But visiting someone’s home is different.
Since then, I’ve started thinking not only about avoiding being late but also about the other person’s circumstances. Perhaps being punctual is not simply about arriving early, but about respecting each other’s time.
